About
I came to Pittsburgh a lifetime ago, essentially for college, but also something more in mind. I needed to find my roots, my home place, for a variety of reasons. Since my mother’s family was from the area, I had heard many first-person stories about life in Pittsburgh, from my grandparents, mother and especially from my Aunt Essie. She vividly described the steel town’s blackouts during WWII, the Pittsburgh Flood of 1936, and everyday life. She was full of stories!
Aunt Essie also took care of me a good bit of the time during my early years. My days were filled with reading, daily walks observing everything, drawing, and of course playing. She taught me how to draw trees, and all about perspective.
Essie viewed the world with curiosity and wonder, while modeling a you-can-do-it attitude. I need her presence now as I leave a career in children’s services to something I have wanted to do for a long time - return to my roots and focus on my artwork.
Hence, the name, Essie Jayne Designs. I think Aunt Essie would enjoy this adventure.
